The Davis Mountains is one of three “sky islands” in Texas. Sky islands are mountain landscapes surrounded by vast desert, and provide protection for plants and animals unable to survive in the hot desert lowlands below. The Davis Mountains State Park and the Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserve are among those working hard to protect and preserve this fragile West Texas landscape.

From this vantage in the Davis Mountains State Park, you can see the transition from mountain trees and grasses to the Chihuahuan Desert below in the distance.

Other sky islands in Texas include the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park, and the Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
